My original Lionel Trains are the trains my family had in the 50's and 60's.They ran under our Christmas tree and on the basement layout my father would build every holiday season - green grass paper and all. They have history and character and to me, they are priceless. After sitting in my father's attic for nearly 40 years, they run flawlessly. When I first ran these steam locomotives after all these years, they puffed smoke from the smoke pellet residue left in the chamber from years ago.
I am building my layout around these trains and the modest collection my father came into from neighbors and friends over the years. I am not a collector of Lionel Trains, but rather an operator. My trains have play wear and over the years they have hit the floor a few times. When I run them, they have the familiar click-clack of the siderods and the smell of post-war ozone fills the room. Long after today's electronic trains die from burned out circuit boards, these post-war trains will still be running strong. |
